Larsen & Toubro commissions Casting Manufacturing Unit in Coimbatore |

Coimbatore: Larsen & Toubro has commissioned a Casting Manufacturing Unit (CMU), specializing in the manufacture of engineered large size castings, as part of L&T’s Coimbatore complex (located near Malumichampatti village). The unit was inaugurated today by A.M.Naik, Chairman & Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro.
Set up at an investment of Rs 120 crore, the facility will manufacture large size castings in SG and Grey Iron for critical applications in sunrise industries like Wind Power and other engineering sectors. The foundry will have a peak capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum.
It is capable of continuous production of castings in the weight range of 10 to 25 MT each. Nearly eighty percent of the castings would be sold to wind turbine manufacturers in India.
The facility has a covered area of 22,000 Sq Mts. on 15 acres of land (total land area 44 acres). It has 11 heavy duty EOT cranes of capacities 25/5 MT to 75/15 MT supported by a 5 M x 5 M shakeout from General Kinematics, US.
The foundry has a unique Vibratory feeder charging system with 15 MT dual crucible, dual track furnace. The sand system is a combination of Disa and IMF, Italy. Equipment for continuous mixers are from IMF and Sider Progetti of Italy, and the civil work has been executed by L&TECC.
According to the company, this facility is benchmarked against the best in the world on productivity for mass production of large sized castings. It has has the latest pollution control, fire control, conservation of environment and natural resource measures.
The Casting Manufacturing Unit is part of the Foundry Business Unit of L&T’s Machinery & Industrial Products Division (MIPD), which already has another foundry at Kansbahal, Orissa.
The CMU is the sixth L&T facility to come up at Coimbatore. The others are a precision manufacturing facility for the company's Heavy Engineering Division, a precision manufacturing unit of the Electrical and Electronic Business group (EBG), a Valves facility for Audco India Limited, a switchgear design centre for EBG, and an electrical systems and equipment unit for EBG. In addition L&T also has a Product Development Centre of MIPD. |
