TI CYCLES OF INDIA FORAYS INTO THE ELECTRIC BIKES SEGMENT  Ambattur Plant ready for production of 100 eBikes a day

Chennai: Tube Investments of India (TII), part of the Rs.9582 crore (USD 2.4billion) Murugappa Group, today announced their venture into the eBikes segment. Mr. M.M.Murugappan, Chairman, TII today inaugurated the eBikes factory at Ambattur, with a production capacity of 100 eBikes a day in the low and high speed categories. These eBikes would be marketed under the aegis of the BSA brand.

The Ambattur plant will have facility for painting, assembly and testing of eBikes. Key parts like motor, controller, battery, lamps, wheel discs, tyres & tubes have been sourced from reputed automotive vendors. The low speed eBikes come with a top speed of 25kmph and high speed models up to 45kmph.  The company will set up a dealer network with top quality service stations in the lines of two wheeler industry. Recharge points will come up in different parts of key cities.

Inaugurating the plant, Chairman of TI cycles of India, Mr. M.M. Murugappan said, “The eBikes is presently a Rs.450 crores market in India and the industry is expected to double in a year’s time. BSA’s foray into the eBikes category helps us to expand our portfolio in the two wheeler market.” He also added, “The eBikes would effectively combat the rising fuel prices and would be a preferred option among the youth of the present days.”

Mr. Arun Alagappan, Senior Vice President - TI cycles, said, “The BSA marketing team is constantly tracking leading style and fashion trends among the youth and their way of life. Hence, care has been taken on every aspect of the marketing mix to suit it to the target group. We are investing heavily into R&D to ensure that our products are of international quality, suiting the discerning Indian customer” He also added, “The initial launch will reach out to the southern markets as it happens to be a strong market for BSA and has high demand for eBikes ”

Benefits of eBikes: No licence and registration required (for low speed models) , Eco-friendly: Protects environment as it does not emit harmful gases like Carbon Monoxide (CO) or Nitrogen Oxide(NOx) , eBikes run on re-chargeable battery and requires 1/10th of running cost of the petrol driven , Low maintenance cost , Easy to use : no gears, clutch or starter, light & convenient , Safe speed suiting the urban roads

The eBikes would cater to the age group of 14 to 21 years, with no license required for the 250watt eBikes. This ‘no license required’ concept would facilitate youngsters without license to drive a Bike. These eBikes have been configured to suit the Indian weather, roads and usage patterns.
