Pune: Chief Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs R.J. Beley, whilst addressing the open house organized by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) in Pune on Wednesday announced that a regional advisory committee (RAC) on service tax will be set up for Pune. CII Pune zonal council chairman Deepak Chhabria, V.S. Krishnan, Commissioner Appeals, Central Excise and Service Tax and Gautam Bhattacharya, Commissioner Service Tax Central Board of Excise and Customs also attended the open house.

Beley said that  the decision to set up the first RAC in Pune was taken because Pune has the fastest rate of growth in the collection of central and excise taxes with a service tax collection totaling Rs.18 billion.   The RAC will address   doubts and concerns regarding queries specific to service taxes.

Beley also added that the department was expecting a serious shortfall in taxes this year because of many plants shutting down production. He remarked that the dip in production at the Tata motors plant and the closure of the Akrudi facility of Bajaj Auto would impact revenue collection. The department was expecting a sales tax collection of Rs.36 billion this year as against Rs.43,2 billion last year.

In addition to setting up the RAC, the department has created a e-helpline facility to address service tax queries online. An FAQ booklet and a CD of answers to helpline queries have also been released.
