During the past 15 months, the prices of casting have surged to Rs 30 per kg from Rs 11.50 to Rs 12 per kg.

Rajkot : During the past 15 months there has been an increase of around 150 per cent in the prices of casting, from Rs 11.50 - Rs 12 per kg to Rs 30 per kg . This steep increase in casting prices has taken its toll on machine tools and lathe machine industry in Rajkot.

Casting is a fundamental component in manufacturing lathe machines. Pig iron and iron scrap is used to make these castings.

Rajkot is one of the main lathe machine production centres in India, with 150 to 200 manufacturing units located in and around Rajkot.

These are all mostly small and medium units producing approximately 5000 machines a month. Of the total production 85 per cent caters to the domestic market while 15 per cent of the production is exported.
