BEML manufacturing unit to be set up in the Palakkad district of Kerala Print E-mail

New Delhi : A new manufacturing unit of BEML Limited, a Mini-ratna Category-I Company under the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, is slated to come up at at Kanchikode in the Palakkad district of Kerala. The new unit will manufacture defence products and parts for Railways.

Defence minister A.K. Antony, who made the announcement on Monday, added that the first phase of the factory would come up on 400 acres of land provided on a long term lease by the state government (KINFRA).

V.S. Achuthanandan, Chief Minister of Kerala, will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate the construction work of the new unit on January 18, 2009. The lease deed for the land will be handed over by S Ramnath, managing director, Kinfra, to officials of BEML limited on the same day.

KINFRA is already in possession of the 400 acres at Sathyanathapalam in Kanjikode.

Initially, for the first phase of the project the central government would allocate Rs.255 crore. The company, in the first phase, is expected to create employment for around 500 people and the whole project is expected to employ around 2000 people.

By the third year of operation, the company is expected to generate a turnover of approximately Rs 300 crore.

By further expansion of production capacity, in the second phase of the project, the turnover will be doubled. In line with future expansion plans during the second phase of the project, the state government has agreed to provide an additional 600 acres of land.

According to media reports, the work on the site is expected to begin by March. For the implementation of the project, the company will set up an Industrial Relation Committee.
