Chennai : Cryolor Asia Pacific, fully owned subsidiary of France’s Cryolor SA (part of the $17-billion Air Liquide group), is setting up facility to manufacture storage tanks for liquefied cryogenic gases at an investment of Rs 45 crore. The manufacturing plant will come up on 13 acres of land at Melmaruvattur near Chennai.

The first phase of construction began today and this plant is expected to be operational by 2010.

In the first phase, the plant covering a built up area of 15,000 sq. meters, will manufacture tanks of capacities between 10 and 60 kilo litres which cost Euro 20000 to 60000. per tank. In the second phase another plant will be constructed in order to build larger storage tanks up to 300 kilo litres and transportation equipment.

Cryolor India MD, Mr. Ravin Mirchandani said that Chennai was geographically best suited to supply to the company’s markets outside Europe considering the port facilities there and the upcoming port at Nagapattinam.

The containers, which are used to store liquefied gases such as liquid oxygen, nitrogen and liquefied natural gas at very low temperatures (minus 196 degrees Celsius) will be manufactured using automated high technology machines for welding stainless steel.  The facility is expected to employ 65 - 70 people initially.

The tanks manufactured in India will cater to both domestic and export markets. The new plant will manufacture 250-300 units of industrial gas tanks per year, 50% of which would be exported.

Mr. Mirchandani said that the company expected to double its global turnover with the setting up of the new plant.
