CII BESU Industrial Research, Innovation & HRD Centre launched at Shibpur Print E-mail

New Delhi: Kapil Sibal,  Minister for Human Resource Development, launched the CII – BESU Industrial Research, Innovation & HRD Centre at 4th CII University – Industry Council Symposium at BESU (Bengal Engineering And Science University), Shibpur, West Bengal.

The Center will be working on a basic model of a National Innovation Center with Regional centers with separate IPR cells (Intellectual Property Rights Cells) under its umbrella.

A MoU was also signed between CII and Association of Indian Universities with an objective of taking various steps to enable universities, colleges and industries especially the MSME to evolve joint research projects.

This is expected to help in establishing a mechanism for instituitionalising joint University – Industry Research at the national level. The MoU was signed by Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII and Mr. M D Tiwari, Association of Indian Universities.

Shri. Kapil Sibal stated that every year 900,000 students enroll for engineering courses in India, but contrary to this picture out only 12% makes it to college after passing plus 2 levels. The Global average is 27% and in Europe and USA 50 – 70% and the target for India by 2020 is set at 30%. He also shared that the department has earmarked Rs.31,000 cr for State Universities.

Emphasising on the need for University – Industry Partnership, Shri. Sibal stated that this partnership should be supportive to get synergy and benefit from each other. He announced that begining 2010, a University – Industry Congress will be organised to take this partnership forward in a more structured way.

Mr. Mukul Somany, Chairman, CII(ER) said that CII – BESU Industrial Research, Innovation & HRD Centre is formed with an objective to focus on University – Industry collaboration, promote technology sharing, help capacity building and to crystallise quality HRD.

Prof. Ajoy Kr. Ray, Vice Chancellor, BESU, Shibpur on the occasion said, that the CII – BESU Industrial Research, Innovation & HRD Centre will usher a new era of science and technology in India. It will be modelled in hierarchal structure for connectivity to vast knowledge base. He shared that this unique center will be open for students and faculties across the world.
