New Delhi:  Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has announced that they would commence testing and certification services for wind turbine generators in India in accordance to UL standard for safety.

UL’s evaluation and support will cover the entire wind turbine assembly, including components and sub assemblies, and qualify products to carry the UL mark. The certification will facilitate Indian manufacturers access to the North American market.

Designed to curtail the time and resources manufacturers dedicate to project administration and management, the service is comprehensive and flexible, allowing manufacturers to select the level of evaluation they need, based on differences in turbine construction and their proposed location and application.

"We at UL have worked closely with manufacturers globally, and have eventually come up with a comprehensive testing and certification service for wind turbine components. UL’s comprehensive wind turbine certification service will enable Indian companies to have easy access to the fast growing global energy market," said Manish Bhatnagar, Director – Sales & Marketing, UL India.

UL recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Germanischer Lloyd Industrial Services GmbH (GL) in Hamburg, Germany. UL and GL collaboration will offer manufacturers international certification for their wind energy systems, which will help expand their product acceptance in various markets around the world primarily North American market.

"Wind energy is emerging to be one of the most significant components of the Indian renewable energy sector. No doubt wind energy is becoming a major contributor to the total power generation in wind prone states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan, to mention a few," Manish Bhatnagar said. In the current time, when there is evident shortage of power, it is imperative for a developing country like India to have effective use of renewable energy as alternate power generation.

This is another one of UL's initiatives to promote Renewable Energies, as UL is building up engineering competency in the PV segment in India and recently announced the global lab expansion from two to four labs by 2010. UL also participated in the Renewable Energy India 2009 expo.  Globally UL has invested heavily in alternative energies like solar along with wind and has outlined plans to maintain and advance its position as a preferred partner in testing and certification in the renewable energy sector.
