ACMA announces initiatives for curbing sales of spurious automotive products Print E-mail

New Delhi: In order to curb sales of spurious automotive products, the Automotive Components Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) has announced various initiatives.

These initiatives include common raids, involving the auto component companies, representations to the Government, disciplinary actions, the Asli- Naqli campaign and Seminars and conferences, etc. ACMA has set up a separate cell called the Consumer Affairs Committee which has undertaken measures such as increasing consumer awareness, and conducting raids to help curb the duplicate market.

According to ACMA, the spurious auto-part sales amount to Rs 5,300 crores, which accounts for 30-35% of the total demand for replacement parts in a Rs 16,500 crore replacement market.

The replacement market size is poised to grow significantly with the increasing population of vehicles in the country. In light of the sale of counterfeit auto parts increasing at an alarming rate in India, the steps taken by ACMA are significant in protecting the replacement market.

Companies like Bosch, Lucas, Delphi, NRB Bearings, Elofic, Asahi Glass etc have joined together to conduct common raids rigorously under the umbrella of ACMA . The common raids are conducted with the assistance of law enforcing authorities and this is an ongoing activity with an objective to create awareness and fear psychosis amongst unscrupulous traders.

The Government sees loss of revenue in the form of excise, duties, VAT and other local taxes. Currently, the Government is incurring a loss of approximately Rs 4,250 crores as per ICRA Management Consultancy services.

"Even though companies like Bosch, Delphi, Lucas etc are conducting independent raids also, ACMA, through common raids, is creating greater awareness to generate support from various government bodies and customers," said Mr. Soumitra Bhattacharya, Vice President, Bosch Ltd & Chairman ACMA Consumer Affairs Committee, which is steering this initiative on behalf of ACMA members.

As a pilot project, 34 raids have been conducted in Northern India in the past 6 months. This project will now be extended throughout the country shortly.
