Ford signs MoU with TN Govt to set up Engine Plant and Double Production Print E-mail

Chennai: Ford India has signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government to establish a new engine manufacturing unit and to double its production capacity to two lakh cars annually, at an investment outlay of Rs. 1500 crore. This investment plan is part of Ford's ongoing investment plan of US$ 500 million which was announced earlier.

The engine facility will have a capacity to produce 2.5 lakh engines a year and is expected to commence production from next year onwards.

Ford's manufacturing facility at Maraimalainagar, near Chennai currently employs about 2100 people. The expansion and the addition of the new engine manufacturing facility are expected to create another 1000 jobs.

The plant is currently gearing up for the volume production of the Ford Figo, which was unveiled yesterday by Alan Mulally, President and CEO, Ford Motor Company.

The MoU was signed by Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India and M.F. Farooqui, Principal Secretary [Industries], Government of Tamil Nadu in the presence of TN Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Alan Mulally President and CEO, Ford Motor Company, Timothy J. Roemer U.S. Ambassador to India, Andrew T. Simkin U.S Consul General in Chennai, John Parker executive vice-president of Ford Motor Company and Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi.
