Indian Railway Research, Design and Standards Organisation to be revamped |

New Delhi: The Research, Design and Standards Organisation of the Indian Railways will now be revamped to bring in line with the modern research organizations and a Centre for Railway Research would be set up in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur for research in key areas of technology and to give a thrust to indigensiation in the Railways.
Announcing this while presenting the Railway Budget for the year 2010-11 in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of Railways, Kumari Mamata Banerjee said that the Railways would establish strong research partnerships with premier institutes like IITs, NITs, CSIR and DRDO.
She said that the facilities of the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) would be made available for cooperative research and standardization undertaken through the Asian Railways’ Association.
The expansion of Indian Railways and modernization would require a strong emphasis on developing indigenous research and development capabilities, she added.
Kumari Mamata Banerjee also proposed the setting up of four multi-disciplinary training centres at Cuttack, Coochbehar, Malda and Jabalpur. In addition, a state-of-the-art advanced loco pilot training centre would also be set up at Kharagpur.
The Railway Minister also announced that Railways’ training institutions would now be opened for the benefit of railway personnel from south and south-east Asian countries.
The Railway Minister also announced the setting up of an advanced Railway Track Training Centre at Beleghata for training of gangmen and gatemen.
117 new train projects are expected to be flagged off by the end of March 2010, 52 long distance express trains and 28 passenger trains to be introduced, Double-decker coaches to be introduced in two trains each from Delhi and Kolkata. |
