Delegation from German Fraunhofer Institute visits Volkswagen Pune Plant Print E-mail

Pune –  A Delegation of experts from the renowned Fraunhofer Institute, Germany visited Volkswagen’s Pune plant today. It was headed by Prof. Hans Joerg Bullinger, President Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.  and was welcomed by Dr. Thomas Dahlem, Director Manufacturing Engineering, Volkswagen India Private Limited.

Dr. Dahlem, during his plant tour with the delegation highlighted the fact that the Rs. 3,800 crore investment of the plant has been the biggest investment by a German company so far in India. The plant also provides a high degree of employment to the region and plans to employ some 2500 people locally by the end of 2010.

The Pune plant covers all stages in the production process from press shop through body shop and paint shop to final assembly. It has a maximum annual capacity of 110,000 vehicles. In addition to the Volkswagen Polo, the Pune plant also builds the Škoda Fabia.

The plant is one of the most modern plants amongst the Volkswagen Group and was inaugurated on March 31, 2009. Volkswagen India plans to celebrate the first successful year of completion of its Pune plant with a several activities starting March 27, 2010.

Fraunhofer develops technological innovations and novel systems solutions for their customers, the Fraunhofer Institutes help to reinforce the competitive strength of the economy in their region, throughout Germany and in Europe. The Institute’s research activities are aimed at promoting the economic development of the industrial society, with particular regard for social welfare and environmental compatibility.
