Ahmedabad: SKF formally inaugurated it's first factory in India for large sized bearings at Ahmedabad. SKF has invested around INR 2.75 billion (SEK 450 million) to set up this factory. At full capacity it is expected to employ 300 people.

The new factory will manufacture medium to large size bearings of various types and serve customers segments such as railways, wind, power generation, mining, and construction, material handling equipment, power transmission and industrial electrical.

"This plant is important for us as it provides the platform to extend our product range to more application segments," said Chandramowli Srinivasan, Chairman, SKF Technologies [India] Pvt Ltd.

The factory will respond to the growing demand from the domestic Indian market as well as further strengthen SKF's manufacturing presence for the heavy industrial segment in Asia.

The Ahmedabad factory has a state-of-the-art heat treatment facility. It is also equipped with a metrology lab with all the latest equipments and instrumentation for quality checks and on line control to ensure manufacturing excellence.

The factory is built according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Standard (LEED). It includes waste water recycling with zero discharge water treatment system. It also includes a harvesting system for rainwater, as well as a demand controlled ventilation system to increase indoor air quality.

It is strategically located in one of the most industrialized and fastest growing areas of India. "Today is a major milestone in the history of SKF India. With this plant in Ahmedabad we will further strengthen our offerings in this region of India," Srinivasan added.

SKF also inaugurated it's new factory in Haridwar on 7th April 2010. "The opening of these new factories, which means that we now have five factories in India, shows our strong commitment to supporting our growth in India and in Asia," said Tom Johnstone, President and CEO.

"SKF has been present in India for more than 85 years and it is a very important market for us, both in terms of business and for the development of products," he added.

At the end of last year SKF also inaugurated a Global Testing Center in Bangalore and a Solution Factory in Pune. The opening of these facilities supports the growing demand in India and strengthens SKF's manufacturing presence in the fast developing markets in Asia.
