Chennai: Rane Engine Valve Ltd (REVL), flagship company of the Rane Group engaged in the production of Engine Valves and Valve Train Components, inaugurated its new LPS line for manufacturing Valves for Mahindra & Mahindra, Farm Equipment Sector.

This line boasts of productivity improvement by 18%, reduction in inventory by 80%, reduction in Space utilization by 50% and reduction in material travel distance by 200%. The in-house teams of engineers and technicians have successfully set up this new line through improvements in the existing line as a part of Lean Manufacturing Practices (LPS).

REVL adopts the practice in 4 model areas and follows the methodology of identifying and eliminating waste (MUDA). With this new line REVL will increase its valve production for M&M Farm Equipment Sector.

"REVL's plant here at Alandur was the first manufacturing plant of the Group established in 1959. If we have to ensure its survival for some years, the productivity has to be improved multifold. LPS is one initiative that will help us to do that. How rapidly we can deploy this horizontally in this plant will determine its future," said L. Ganesh, Chairman, Rane Group.

The Model Line features automated material transfers between stations, single piece flow, visual management, 5 S and TPM friendly machine features and layout arrangement, Multi machine manning, SOP (Standard Operating Procedure in Local Language i.e. TAMIL) making it ergonomically easy for the employees. The layout is as per the process sequence.

With the minimal investment and adopting the effective LPS, this special line will help in substantially increasing the production of valves and successfully reduce the production time, improve the quality, reduce the inventory and use the available space and resource effectively.

"Over the years we have grown – from being the first manufacturing unit of Rane Group to being the market leader in Engine Valves today.  We have constantly strived for improvements and this new LPS line established for Mahindra & Mahindra Farm Equipment Sector is a significant indicator of our endeavour to constantly innovate and transform according to the needs of our customers," said G. Ramkumar, President, REVL.

The company serves a variety of industry segments such as, Passenger Cars, Multi-utility vehicles, light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, farm tractors, three-wheelers, two wheelers and stationary engines.  REVL embraces TQM as a way of life and it has won many awards and accolades and the coveted Deming Prize in the year 2005.

REVL has 5 manufacturing facilities across India. REVL’s annual turnover for the financial 2009-10 stood at Rs 234 million with 33% of its revenue coming from exports. It is the market leader with more than 55% market share in India.
