DRDO and FICCI conduct Innovation Ecosystem Workshop under IUSSTF Print E-mail

Bangalore: DRDO and FICCI organised a two day Innovation Ecosystem Workshop on 28- 29 Oct 2010 under the aegis of India-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) as one of the initiatives.

DRDO is intensely interacting with Industry, academics and many other S&T departments to design, develop, test & produce large varieties of Defence Systems in order to raise its level of performance and delivery, not only within DRDO, but its partners as a system. Since last one year, DRDO is actively involved in pushing innovation in the laboratories, operations and management.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Prahlada, Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller R & D (Aeronautics & Services Interaction). Lockheed Martin Corporation (LM) is one of the participants in this Innovation Ecosystem Workshop. Jennifer Byrne, Vice President, Lockheed Martin Corporation led the US team of speakers and resource persons. LM corporation in partnership with DST, FICCI & IUSSTF has already been involved in implementing the India Innovation Growth Program in India.

The purpose of the workshop was to generate first level champions for innovation across DRDO. These champions will spread the culture within DRDO as well as with partner institutions. The champions have been handpicked across major laboratories and across varied disciplines and background.

The speakers were drawn from US & Indian industry, academia, business associations and government officials. The workshop addressed elements of and models for successful innovation ecosystems through sessions on culture of innovation, diversity in perspective, encouragement of creativity and tolerance threshold for risk-taking.

The Prime Minister has declared this decade as the Decade of Innovation and formed the National Innovation Council working under Dr Sam Pitroda and reporting directly to him. The importance & criticality of innovation in all aspects of life has been recognised by all Departments of Government of India. DRDO has also recognised the importance of innovation in its R&D role in Ministry of Defence and undertaken many initiatives.

Dr. Arabinda Mitra, Executive Director, Indo-US Science & Technology Forum was actively involved with the Innovation Initiative and has provided necessary support in organising the workshop.
