New Delhi: Ayumi Fujino, who was previously UNIDO Representative in Thailand, has taken over from Philippe Scholtes as the UNIDO Representative in India and Director of the UNIDO Regional Office in India.

Ayumi Fujino was also Head of the Regional Office (2006-2010) and responsible for UNIDO operations in the industrial sector in Thailand. She was involved particularly in trade capacity building through strengthening of testing laboratory facilities, promotion of cleaner production, improvement of industrial energy efficiency, alternative rural energy development as well as rural livelihood development in Thailand and in the countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

Fujino began her career with UNIDO in the 1980’s, serving in various capacities including Associate Expert from 1987 to 1989 and  as Industrial Development Officer at UNIDO headquarters in Vienna from 1990 to 1996, in which capacity she was responsible for the formulation and implementation of technical cooperation programmes  for the integration of women in industrial development through mainstreaming of gender in industrial policy development, as well as promotion of women entrepreneurship in various industrial subsectors.

Later, while at the UNIDO headquarters in Vienna from 1997 to 2006, Ms Fujino designed and implemented various technical cooperation projects for the development of micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs) especially in the rural areas in selected industrial sector clusters such as food processing, textiles, leather etc. with the geographical focus on countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Central America.
