Hyderabad: The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to invest around Rs 1,000 crore to expand its existing missile manufacturing facility near Hyderabad and to create state-of-the-art testing facilities for high-tech aircraft engines and missiles.

Approximately Rs 650 crore will be invested for the high-tech missile manufacturing capacity expansion programme in collaboration with Bharat Dynamics Limited and Rs 350 crore will go into developing hypersonic aircraft engine testing facilities such as a hypersonic wind tunnel for testing scram jet engine and missiles that fly up to mach 12 speeds.

According to Dr V. K. Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister and Director-General of DRDO, the facility is expected to take about three and a half years to be completed.

Another high-tech facility for testing electronic warfare systems and other devices was recently established near Dundigal. Dr. Saraswat was speaking to reporters on the eve of the three-day Aviation Conclave held in Hyderabad.

The Aviation Conclave, a three-day event organised by the Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), brought together a host of experts from the aviation industry, airports, airlines, manufacturers and policy drivers to discuss important issues and to enable the aviation industry to provide single-window solutions in the maintenance, repair, and operations sector and ancillary segments.

Dr. Saraswat also said that the project report for the design and development of 70 to 100-seater Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) will be ready the following year and the first aircraft will be ready to be  rolled out in about seven to twelve years.
