HEC's G K Pillai takes additional charge as Chairman of HMT Machine Tools Ltd Print E-mail

Ranchi: G K Pillai, CMD, HEC Ltd is taking additional charge as Chairman of HMT Machine Tools Limited, a wholly-owned Subsidiary of HMT Limited. A formal order to this effect has been given by the Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India.

HMT Machine Tools Limited (HMT-MTL), one of the oldest and well known public sector undertakings established in 1953, has been ailing for some time and the Government of India, in its efforts to revive the company, is considering a revival package.

G K Pillai joined HEC in 2007 and was responsible for it's turn around, making the net-worth of the company positive and enabling the company to earn consecutive net profits for 4 years in succession. The government has appointed Shri G K Pillai as Chairman of the ailing company, looking at the turn around of HEC Limited, which he is serving for the past three & half years as CMD.

"The revival of HEC limited had been a challenging task for him which was achieved by mobilization and team work at HEC since his joining the company in 2007," said S.Subramaniam, Sr DGM, HEC.

HMT-MTL manufactures a wide variety of Machine Tools at its units, which are spread over five locations at Bangalore (Karnataka), Hyderabad (AP), Pinjore (Haryana), Ajmer (Rajasthan) and Kalamassery (Kerela). Each unit is specialized in a particular family of Machines. The company also has a Sales and Service network across different locations in the country.

G.K.Pillai after completing his B.E. (Hons.) from B.I.T.S. Pilani in 1973 joined Instrumentation Limited, Palakkad, a Government of India Enterprise in Kerala. After a successful career there for 21 years, he joined the private sector at Fisher Sanmar Ltd as Vice President and rose to become the Chief Executive of the company. Following his successful stint in both Public Sector and Private sector industry, Shri Pillai was selected to head HEC at Ranchi as its Chairman-cum-Managing Director.

Recognizing its performance, HEC was awarded the prestigious SCOPE Award for Excellence in Management and Turnaround 2007-08 by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh on the 15th October 2009 in Delhi. HEC also bagged the Industrial Excellence Award – from the Indian Nuclear Society for development of special nuclear grade steel – the first time in India and the sixth country in the world to achieve it. Shri GK Pillai was also honored with Turn Around Leader Award at the Asia Pacific HRM Congress held in Bangalore on 3rd September 2010.
