Coimbatore: Hirotec Group, a a Hiroshima-based company that makes doors and exhaust systems, hemming equipment, stamping dies and assembly tooling for cars, plans to invest Rs. 20 crore over the next 2 years to set up a manufacturing facility in Coimbatore that would provide automotive tooling for car manufacturers (hemming tooling). The company has already identified land at Arasur

Hirotec has already invested nearly Rs 10 crore for its design unit (instituted in 2005) in Coimbatore for providing cutting edge engineering and technical services.

The new plant is expected to be fully operational by December 2011. The machines for the unit are being imported from the USA and it is expected to be installed by August this year.

Brian G McGinnity, Chief Financial Officer Hirotec America Inc said that he expects the Coimbatore facility to generate a turnover of 6 million USD (Rs 27.2 crore) during 2011-12 and 15 million USD (Rs 68 crore) by 2012-13. The USD 1.3 billion company currently earns $3 million from its Indian operations.

Hirotec makes car doors for Toyota, Honda, GM, Ford and Mazda. However there are no immediate plans to begin manufacturing whole doors in India. For this the company would have to invest 40 - 60 million USD, which could only be justified by a minimum order for around 300,000 doors.

Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors have already joined the company's customer list in India. Hirotec's Coimbatore design unit competed with VW's tool room in Germany for the Fabia's sedan tool room project. The design for hemming solutions for the doors of General Motor's Volt and Volkswagen's Fabia were done here.

Hirotec will also invest Rs 10 crore at it's plant in Pune. The plant in Pune provides lean body shop tooling, utilizing the latest manufacturing technologies to support the local and global market demand.

In May 2010 the company had announced the renaming of KGHirotec Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd. to Hirotec India Pvt. Ltd. The Hirotec Group's commitment is to bring best in class body-in-white closures to the Indian market by providing high quality, low cost hemming and flexible assembly systems.
