Mumbai: Cooper Corporation Pvt. Ltd, a manufacturer of engine and other auto components, has launched a new line of engines (2, 4 and 6 cylinder engines) in technical collaboration with Ricardo UK.

Ricardo was responsible for the overall design of the engine and Cooper developed all the components for the engine, assembled it and also conducted the required engine tests. This engine will be sold in Indian and global markets.

Cooper Corporation's engine plant, located in Satara, Maharashtra, has a total production capacity of 24000 engines per year. The Government of Maharashtra has conferred the status of "Mega Project" to this engine plant. The company has invested nearly Rs 300 crore in the project. Cooper employs over 2000 people. The company has also invested set-up its own R & D unit to explore the possibilities of developing new products.

"This CRDI engine entails an electronic engine management system and is designed to work with a wide range of applications like automotive engines, power gensets, forklift trucks, earth moving equipment, de-watering pump sets and agricultural pump sets," said Farookh Cooper, Chairman and Managing Director, Cooper Corporation Pvt. Ltd.

The Cooper engine was developed using the most advanced computer aided engineering and simulation tools. Performance & emissions were optimized using wave simulation software, FE analysis was used for structural and thermal simulation, Fluid simulation with Ricardo's Vectis CFD software was used to optimize the combustion system, cooling strategy and EGR mixing and air flow.

The cast iron cylinder block, bed plate and cylinder head of this engine are all manufactured by Cooper Corporation Pvt. Ltd. The manufacturing plant is equipped with precision casting, machining and honing facilities.

The engines currently meet Bharat IV for automotive and it can be upgraded to meet even tougher norms in the future. The B10 life of the engine is 7000h. The vehicle engine life is 250,000 km. The engine is also very easy to service. All service points are on one side. Hydraulic latch adjusters help avoid the periodic tappet clearance checks. The oil change period is 500 hours. The performance regarding noise vibration and harshness is excellent. The cast iron cylinder block, the full bed-plate and the balancer shaft solution are instrumental in achieving this superior NVH performance.

Cooper's products include cylinder heads, cylinder liners, Valve seat inserts, Flywheels and Pulleys. It's centrifugally cast products include Cylinder Head Castings, Crank Case, Radiator Tank, Valve Lifter Guide, Adaptor Ring Gear, Pulley Fan, Connecting Rod, Bearing Housing, Cam Bearing and Diaphragm, Cover for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

The present range of 2, 4 and 6 cylinder engines will be path breaking as they are designed with the future in mind, both for domestic and export markets. These are ideally suited for both genset and automotive applications," the company said in a statement.

The Cooper engines are a great example of technology transfer and collaborative R&D between UK and India.
