M S Unnikrishnan took over as MD of Thermax from 2007. Earlier, as Executive Vice President, he was head of the company's project business - captive power, boilers & heaters and air pollution control.

The capital goods sector, which is of strategic importance to national security and economic independence, comprises a host of manufacturing companies that include machine tools, industrial machinery, process plant equipment, construction & mining equipment, electrical equipment, textile machinery, printing & packaging machinery etc.

The sector currently employs 6 million skilled and semi-skilled workers. It generates employment for sections of workforce including fitters, welders, machine operators and ITI graduates.

"Indian capital goods and engineering industry has a pivotal role to play in the nation building exercise. I am happy that I will be able to contribute positively to fulfill the dreams of a billion plus Indians," Unnikrishnan said.

Unnikrishnan began his career as a graduate trainee with Thermax after completing his mechanical engineering from Regional Engineering College, Nagpur in 1982. From 1987 to 1997, he worked with EID Parry heading the engineering Division and with Terrazzo Incorporated, Sharjah leading its manufacturing, marketing and commercial operations.

He rejoined Thermax in 1997 as General Manager and headed its waste management and absorption cooling divisions, turning around both these businesses and making them profitable.

During Thermax's critical turnaround phase in 2000, as member of the Executive Council, he headed the human resource function and later established the Project Management Office to spearhead the transformation initiative of the company.
