Pipavav Shipyard signs MoU with Babcock, UK to build aircraft carriers Print E-mail

Mumbai: Pipavav Shipyard Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Babcock group, UK to work together to build next generation aircraft carriers in line with the proposed acquisition plan of the Indian Navy.

Pipavav Shipyard, on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, has been developed to have one of the largest dry dock and wet dock facilities in the world. It is currently the only shipyard in India which can make, maintain and dry dock very large size aircraft carriers for the Navy.

Babcock Group's key activities include building the next generation aircraft carriers, managing naval bases, base porting, refitting, refueling and decommissioning submarines, maintaining and refitting warships and providing equipment support on behalf of the UK Government. Babcock has access to know how, skill and experience for the construction of a large aircraft carrier and has gained relevant experience in the design and production of equipment for "Queen Elisabeth" class carrier for the Royal Navy.

"Pipavav will also look for forming Joint Ventures to build similar lead battle ships for friendly countries," the company said in a statement.

The Indian Navy plans to acquire at least three aircraft carriers in the next five to seven years. These aircraft carriers are expected to cost over USD 5 Billion. The Indian Navy has so far imported all it's aircraft carriers from United Kingdom or Russia.
