Bangalore: BEML Limited, a Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Alenia Aeronautica S.p.A., Italy on 22nd June 2011 at the Paris Airshow to pursue a mutual collaboration for designing, manufacturing and selling a new primary/basic training aircraft on a New Generation Screener.

The MoU was signed by V R S Natarajan, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Limited and Alessandro Franzoni, Chief Operating Officer of Alenia Aeronautica.

"This initiative will help Ministry of Defence in finding a reliable source for its requirements of Basic Trainer Aircraft (BTA) and a befitting replacement for the existing HPT-32 Deepaks Trainer Aircrafts," the company said in a statement.

India has selected Pilatus PC-7 aircraft as its trainer for Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots. Price negotiations have started for supplying 75 aircraft to train new pilots. The Swiss aircraft, along with Grob’s G-120 TP, Embraer’s EMB-312 Super Tucano, Finmeccanica’s M-311, Hawker Beechcraft’s T-6C Texan-II and Korean Aerospace’s KT-1, participated in the flight trials last year. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has been given the order to design and manufacture an additional 106 aircrafts. The total cost for the basic trainer is likely to be around $1 billion. The aircraft are expected to be delivered over the next two years.

It may be recalled that BEML has recently diversified further its business into Aerospace and acquired land at SEZ Aerospace Park near Bangalore International Airport for establishing an exclusive Division for the manufacture of aerospace components and aggregates, fabrication of structural sub-assemblies, Jigs for Aircraft structures and migrate in manufacture of aircrafts and helicopters in the years to come. BEML is already manufacturing and supplying Ground Support Vehicles such as Aircraft Towing Tractors, Multi-purpose Weapon Loader and Crash Fire Tender.

Alenia Aeronautica is a global player in designing, building and integrating support complex system for both commercial and defence market worldwide. Its product portfolio includes proprietary Aircraft products like the C-27J, the ATR42MP and the ATR72ASW.
