First Implementation Of Bombardier’s Leading-Edge Mass Transit Signalling And Safety Technology In India

New Delhi: Bombardier Transportation announced today it has received a groundbreaking contract for rail signalling equipment in India from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC). The contract, valued at 30 million euros ($43 million US), involves the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 350 train control and signalling systems for two new sections of lines, totalling 37 kilometres and representing more than half of the Delhi Metro phase II expansion.

For Delhi Metro the new system will enable a predictable and cost-effective operation due to reduced wear and tear on the vehicles. Passengers will benefit from superior safety, short and constant headways and smooth rides.

BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 350 includes an automatic train operation feature that automatically drives the train from station to station, with the driver only supervising the passenger flow, the opening and closing of the doors and giving the departure permission.

The new signalling system from Bombardier will be installed on lines 5 and 6 of Delhi Metro. Line 5, is fully elevated and includes 16 stations connecting Inderlok with the terminal station of Mundka. Work on this line is expected to be concluded by December 2009. Line 6 is a partly elevated, partly underground section with 14 stations that connects Central Secretariat with the terminal station of Badarapur. The installation works on the Line 6 are expected to be concluded by May 2010. The system will be delivered by Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions sites in Sweden, Thailand and India.

In total, the phase II expansion extends the existing network to cover all major destinations in the East-West and North-South corridors of this remarkable city where almost 16 million people presently live and will transport an impressive 4 million passengers every day, reducing their journey time and alleviating the heavy traffic congestion and pollution caused by more than 1 million cars that commute in New Delhi every day. In terms of rolling stock, the phase II expansion will also be served by Bombardier: 340 new BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro cars will transport the people of Delhi, vehicles that integrate the world’s most advanced technologies in metro vehicle manufacture.

Anders Lindberg, President, Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions, said: “We are poised to support local Transit Authorities in the task of placing rail transportation in India amongst the world’s greatest. Bombardier is focusing on the Indian market and this new contract, which is another demonstration of trust in Bombardier, encourages us to firmly pursue other projects in the country”.

Rajeev Jyoti, Managing Director, Bombardier Transportation India, said: “Through its participation in a number of challenging railway projects in India over the last 35 years, including the remarkable traffic management system in Mumbai Western Railway, Bombardier has earned an excellent reputation and is now boosting up its presence in the country with new manufacturing plants and engineering sites, gaining a great understanding of the specific needs of the railway market in India.”

“This contract will allow Bombardier Transportation to showcase for the first time in India some of its leading edge signalling technologies, like the Automatic Train Protection, the Automatic Train Operation, Solid State Interlocking and Traffic Management Systems for Metro application”, Mr. Jyoti underlined.

Bombardier Transportation’s Rail Control Solutions portfolio covers the whole range of BOMBARDIER CITYFLO mass transit solutions, from manual to fully automatic systems as well as communication-based systems. It also provides BOMBARDIER INTERFLO mainline solutions, from conventional systems to ERTMS level 2 systems. Bombardier solutions encompass a complete palette of wayside and onboard products.

Bombardier Transportation has been present in India for over 35 years. It has supplied Indian Railways with technologically advanced rail products, such as the WAP5 and WAG9 electric locomotives for passenger and freight applications and the Mumbai Traffic Management System. This system controls the 60-km rail stretch around Mumbai – one of the world’s heaviest rail commuter traffics – on which the Western Railways run on time and with safety an impressive number of 1,000 trains everyday.

Bombardier Transportation is steadily ramping up its presence in India. Vadodara, Gujarat is home to its propulsion systems manufacturing facility and software development center for signalling and traction applications in India and for other Bombardier Transportation projects around the globe. The site is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified. In Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Infotech Enterprises operates one of the most important engineering centers already sourcing key global projects for Bombardier Transportation.

Potential manufacturing and project associations in India

Bombardier is open to an association with Indian Railways under a Public Private Partnership approach to create a manufacturing facility to produce Bombardier locomotives in India, related to Indian Railways rail freight corridors project.

In the Mass Transit sector Bombardier is developing associations with companies in India.
