Pune: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. unveiled its first monocoque (or unibody) UV, the Mahindra XUV500 at Pune in Maharashtra. Designed and developed in-house by Mahindra, the XUV500 is Mahindra’s first global SUV platform, with significant inputs in styling and development from customers across the globe. Currently, the company will only produce 2,000 units per month at its Chakan plant. Going forward the capacity will be ramped up, depending on the demand.

"For the Mahindra Group, the XUV500 represents ‘Rise’ in action as the team deployed alternative thinking to deliver a high level of technology and performance at an unbeatable price," said Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra Group.

"I am confident that the XUV500 will create a brand new category in the premium SUV segment and find favour both in India and overseas," he added.

The XUV500 would be lunched in Johannesburg, South Africa tomorrow and within the next six months would be launched globally in South America, Australia and SAARC countries. The SUV is expected to raise the company's exports substantially. The monocoque design will meet Europe's stringent crash legislations and emission targets.

"The XUV500 is our first global SUV that has been completely designed and developed around the global customer, with extensive product validation and testing done across Europe, Australia, South Africa, and India. The Mahindra XUV500 offers benefits such as aspirational styling, a product filled with technological advances, advanced safety features, comfort and convenience, etc. hitherto seen only in hi-end SUVs. All this and much more makes this product nothing less than a category creator," said Dr. Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. while speaking at the launch.

Around 200 engineers worked on this project for 4 years at the MRV facility in Chennai. The company has collaborated with international suppliers, tested over 250 prototypes across 2.35 million km in all-weather conditions and in different parts of the world.

Rajan Wadhera, Chief Executive, Technology, Product Development and Sourcing, led the design and development initiative for the XUV500. The vehicle features hydraulic mounts to counter the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of the power train. The XUV500 is also one of the lightest SUVs in its class due to a plastic fuel tank and plastic fenders.

The XUV500 is powered by a 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine which delivers a power-packed 140bhp with 330Nm torque. The 2.2litre engine is meshed with a 6-speed transmission and the 5th generation Variable Geometry Turbocharger.

Available at Mahindra dealerships in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai from October 1st 2011, the XUV500 price range starts at ex-showroom Delhi - Rs.10.80Lacs for the W6 model, Rs.11.95Lacs for the W8 2WD model and Rs.12.88Lacs for the W8 All Wheel Drive (AWD) model.
