Greaves Cotton opens its 5th Light Engines Plant at Shendra, Aurangabad Print E-mail

Mumbai: Greaves Cotton Limited, a Rs. 1,700 crore manufacturer of Diesel / Petrol Engines, Gensets and Construction equipment, inaugurated its green field plant in Shendra, Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The Company has made an initial investment of over Rs. 50 crore for the new plant.

It will have an initial capacity to manufacture 87,000 engines per annum, which will be eventually scaled up to meet the industry demand. This unit will manufacture both single and twin cylinder engines, meeting all contemporary emission norms. With the inauguration of the new plant, the Company’s total production capacity of light engines will go up to more than 3,75,000 per annum.

This manufacturing facility is among the most sophisticated ones for automotive engines in the country. It has a layout based on lean manufacturing system aimed at manufacturing excellence and optimizing all operating parameters. The plant incorporates various eco features like optimum use of daylight, energy saving, rain water harvesting and soil conservation.

Currently, over 80% of the diesel three wheelers in India are powered by Greaves engines and more than 2 million Greaves engines are already in the market powering small 3 and 4 wheeled commercial vehicles. Greaves Cotton is the supplier of choice for leading vehicle manufacturers like Piaggio, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Atul Auto, Scooters India and several others. Greaves Cotton is among the world's largest manufacturers of single cylinder diesel engines.

"Greaves Cotton has a longstanding association with the Aurangabad Industrial belt since the Company set up its first plant for manufacturing light weight internal combustion engines in Chikalthana way back in 1975. With its superior technological processes, large-scale manufacturing set up and eco-friendly focus, the plant is a testimony to Greaves Cotton’s vision to be a global leader in auto engines segment," said Karan Thapar, Chairman, Greaves Cotton.

The engines from the new plant will be primarily supplied to existing as well as new three and four wheeled small commercial vehicles manufacturers. Besides, these engines can also be used in generating sets, pumping sets, marine and host of other industrial and agricultural applications.

The plant was inaugurated by Mr. Karan Thapar, Chairman, Greaves Cotton Limited. A large gathering of employees was present on the occasion.

Greaves Cotton Limited has ten manufacturing units, comprehensive marketing and service/parts network throughout the country.
