Sanand: PSA Peugeot Citroen plans to roll out new cars from the upcoming Sanand plant in 2014. It will roll out 1.70 lakh cars per annum from 2014 and double the capacity in 2018. The company performed the groundbreaking ceremony of its new plant on Thursday.

The automotive and engine/gearbox plant will be constructed on an area of 600 acres, to which Peugeot will add a suppliers park with an investment of Rs. 4,000 cores, approximately € 650 million. Infrastructure at the plant will be at par with European plants. This investment will add up to 5,000 new jobs for the automobile hub.

In conjunction with this, Peugeot and the Gujarat state have the intention of creating an Automotive Skills Development Institute (ASDI) to be located within the Sanand Automotive cluster and contribute to its further growth and development.

The next step to be carried out over the coming weeks will include the completion of soil analysis, immediately followed by preliminary ground leveling works. The beginning stages of laying the foundation are scheduled subsequently.

The company will produce B-plus, C and D class cars at the plant, for the Indian market. Its model 508 will be the first to get rolled out in 2014. Certain changes in the C-class cars will be made to suit the requirements of the Indian customer. Peugeot is also expected to bring its hybrid (diesel and electric) vehicles to India. The R&D for Sanand plant will be slowly shifted from Europe to India.

The ground-breaking ceremony signifies an important landmark for the development of Peugeot's India project which follows the State Support Agreement (SSA) signature held in Gandhinagar on September 1st, 2011. This new milestone is in line with Peugeot's introduction schedule for its industrial and commercial settlement in India.

"I take this opportunity to reiterate and reassure you of the longstanding commitment and dedication that we devote to this project," said Mr. Vincent Rambaud, Director General of Peugeot. "Peugeot will grow together with you by bringing the best of its passion, know how and technology to incredible India, vibrant Gujarat and to all those involved in making our journey successful."

Mr. Grégoire Olivier, Member of the Managing Board PSA Peugeot Citroën and CEO of Asian Operations, Mr. Vincent Rambaud, Director General of Peugeot and Mr. Frédéric Fabre, Managing Director of PCA Motors India performed the bhoomi poojan and the ground-breaking ceremony.

"Gujarat is emerging as a Global auto hub. I congratulate Peugeot on becoming a part of it," said Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.

Of the 600 acres, about 100 acre will be used by its vendors. It has already tied up with Ford for diesel engines and with BMW for gasoline engines.

The Peugeot Brand will be at the Delhi Auto Expo in January 2012.
