Feasability study for expansion of Cochin Shipyard to be completed soon Print E-mail

Cochin: Union Minister for Shipping, G K Vasan has directed Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to set up a committee and undertake a feasibility study for setting up ship repair facility / shipyard at Vizhinjam, Poovar or Azhikkal in Kerala. This study is scheduled to be completed by 30 November 2011.

The Minister visited Cochin Shipyard on 04 November 2011 and reviewed the company's present operations and future plans. He was apprised of the performance of CSL and the growth plans of the shipyard. Prof K V Thomas, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution was also present on the occasion.

The yard also successfully carried out the bollard pull tests on the first Anchor Handling Tugs being constructed for SCI by the yard. The tests were undertaken at the new facility recently set up at Vizhinjam near Trivandrum. This is the first time in India that such a high capacity tug has been tested for bollard pull. The 500 T SWL Bollard Pull facility set up at Vizhinjam is the largest in Asia and was dedicated to the nation on 23 September 2011 by K Babu, Minister for Excise and Ports, Government of Kerala.

Cochin Shipyard delivered another Platform Supply Vessel to Brage Supplier KS, Norway. This is the second of the high technology offshore vessel that have been constructed and delivered by CSL this year. The Protocol documents of the ship were signed by Vinayakumar P, Director (Technical) on behalf of Cochin Shipyard and John Nielson, representative of Brage Supplier KS , Norway.

The vessel is of PSV 09 CD type designed by STX OSV Norway and is classed under the Rules and Regulations of Det Norske Veritas, flagged under the Norwegian regulations. The 86 x 19 Metre vessel is a high end Diesel Electric PSV with by 4 Nos 1665 KW Diesel gen. sets and 2 Nos 2200 KW contra rotating propellers. The vessel with Grade II Dynamic Positioning features has been assigned the ‘CLEAN’ design notation by DNV signifying the highest levels of environmental compliance. The vessel with accommodation for 44 persons also meets the requirements of COMF class signifying high comfort levels due to special arrangements to attain very low levels of noise and vibration. The vessel has special stainless steel tanks with Nitrogen inerting arrangements to carry low flash liquids and is capable of all other normal offshore supply operations.

The shipyard is constructing two more of the same class of vessels for Norwegian owners.
