New Delhi: Voith Hydro Private Limited has received an order for engineering, supply of equipment and construction of entire plant equipment package including Turbine Generator and Electrical & Mechanical auxiliaries for 2 x 50 MW Sainj Hydro-Electric Project. The company has a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Vadodara and a workforce of 240 employees.

The scheme is a Run-of-the-River hydro power plant on the river Sainj near Suind village, and a tributary of Beas in Kullu, a district in Himachal Pradesh. Run-of-the-river hydro power plants require considerably smaller water storage, and at times no water storage at all, and do not obstruct the natural flow of the river.

Two Pelton turbines of 50 MW each will be installed for power generation.

"Himachal Pradesh, being a state in the Himalayan region, has a large untapped hydro power potential. Development of hydro power plants like Sainj Hydro-Electric project will help tap such potentials and bridge the gap between demand and supply of power in the country. Hydro power is the most reliable, cleanest and the oldest resource for generating renewable energy," said, Mr Amresh Dhawan, Managing Director of Voith Hydro in India.

The power house site is situated in the Kullu valley which attracts travellers from all across the world every year for its sprawling Apple orchards and beautiful hills covered with pine and deodar forests.

Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. is a joint venture between State Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP) and the local State Electricity Board (HPSEB) and assigned the role of development of power projects in Himachal Pradesh, India.

The announcement by Voith is significant in the context of expanding bilateral economic and trade ties between India and Germany. Germany and India are currently celebrating a 15-month programme series to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between both countries. Voith participates in this series as a city partner in Kolkata, Hyderabad and New Delhi.
