Lapp India Pvt. Ltd. sets up Centre of Excellence at R.V.C.E., Bangalore Print E-mail

Bangalore: Lapp India Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Lapp Group - the German connectivity solutions major - has set up a Centre of Excellence at the R.V. College of Engineering in Bangalore, in order to improve the quality of teaching and impart practical skills to students in the critical areas of cables, cable accessories and systems.

RV College of Engineering is the second in the country to introduce 'cables' as a core subject of the curriculum, after PSG College of Engineering in Coimbatore that also houses Lapp India Pvt. Ltd.’s first Centre of Excellence.

"To induce a research mode among students right from the beginning, we will be setting-up five Centres of Excellence across the nation by the end of next year," said Dr. Ewald Bentz, Director, Lapp India Pvt. Ltd.

Mr.Andreas Lapp, Chairman of The Board LAPP HOLDINGS AG, highlighted the necessity of knowledge transfer by sharing the legend of his father Mr. Oskar Lapp, who invented the first control cable-‘OLFLEX®’ over 50 years ago and simplified life of mechanical engineers worldwide. "We want to facilitate students, who are the future, with the best infrastructure and open avenues for innovative thinking, ensuring a better tomorrow. In a  depleting energy scenario it is crucial to understand the appropriate usage of products and a game-changer to balance the situation will be to cultivate this practice early," he said.

"Students come with a fresh perspective and can re-look at technology and develop more sustainable and inclusive applications," said Dr. Ewald Bentz.

The Lapp Centre of Excellence at the R.V. College of Engineering is expected to go a long way in enhancing academia-industry interaction. The Centre, spread over an area of 1225 sq. ft., consists of a laboratory facility with end-to-end cable research and testing requirements. It will enable the students to develop sustainable and inclusive cabling technology solutions. It will also cater to the teaching faculty by providing them necessary knowledge, both theoretical and practical, on the cable segment.

"The current energy output of India is approximately 180 GW, yet there is a shortage between 15-20% during the peak hours and the most striking fact is that almost 30% energy produced is being lost during transmission and distribution due to inappropriate usage of cables. This clearly showcases the knowledge divide about cables as an application," said Dr. B. S. Satyanarayana, Principal, R.V. College of Engineering. Though cables are key enablers for all electricity needs and find application in almost all engineering products, they are not given the due importance they deserve in the Indian context.

Mr. Srinivas P Kamisetty, Managing Director of Lapp India Pvt. Ltd., Dr. Ingo Karsten, General Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany and Dr M.K. Panduranga Setty, President, RSST were present at the inauguration of the centre.

Mr. Andreas Lapp is the Honorary Consul of the Republic of India for Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
