Chennai: Sundaram-Clayton Limited has commenced pilot production of magnesium die-castings at its Padi plant. The company is undertaking trial production of medium-sized parts, like casings and covers, using magnesium.

"We are now exploring magnesium die-castings as they are lighter than aluminium. Many car manufacturers are looking to use magnesium die-casting to make light weight cars," said C N Prasad, Group President and CEO, Sundaram Clayton Limited. The facility will have an initial production capacity of 1,000 tonnes a year. The castings are expected to go fully commercial in 2013. SCL imports the magnesium from Australia and Europe.

The trend of using magnesium casting is catching up with many manufacturers, particularly in Europe. The company would focus on supplying magnesium-die casting to premium car manufacturers. It is still negotiating with passenger car makers for supplier arrangement.

Sundaram-Clayton Limited has three manufacturing plants at Padi, Mahindra World City SEZ and Hosur. It is setting up a new greenfield plant in Oragadam, with an investment of Rs 85 crore, which is expected to start commercial production by April 2012. The plant will have a capacity of 12,000 tonnes per annum and will primarily cater to the domestic market. Civil work at the 1 lakh-sq-ft manufacturing plant is nearing completion.

The company recorded a turnover of Rs 820 crore in FY 2010-11. The turnover is expected to cross Rs 1,000 crore this year. It plans to increase its total production capacity from 40,000 tpa to 60,000 tpa in the next one and a half years. Exports account for 30 per cent of the company's revenues.

In 1998, Sundaram-Clayton, Brakes Division, won the 'Deming Application Prize' becoming the first in India and only the fourth company outside Japan to receive this honour. In 2002, the company went on to win the Japan Quality Medal, awarded by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), Japan thereby becoming the first company in India and the second outside Japan to win this distinction. Later, the company became WABCO-TVS.

This year, Sundaram-Clayton, Die Casting Division, was awarded the Platinum Distinction in the Indian Manufacturing Excellence Awards.

"The culture of continuous improvement, active participation of all employees in improvement activities, goal congruence at all levels in the organization and top management's commitment toward manufacturing excellence are some of the critical success factors that led to this achievement. I wish to dedicate this award to all employees. This would motivate the Sundaram-Clayton team to create new benchmarks in manufacturing excellence," said C N Prasad.

Sundaram-Clayton Limited is a preferred solution provider to major global OEMs like Cummins, Volvo, Daimler Commercial Vehicles, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Hyundai, TVS Motors, WABCO etc.
