New Delhi 29th August 2008: Today top industry leaders issued statements expressing discontent regarding the controversy surrounding Tata Motor's prestigious Nano project in West Bengal.

RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal, Jamshyd Godrej, C K Birla, Gautam Thapar, Venu Srinivasan, K V Kamath, President of CII and other industry leaders have expressed their disgruntlement with the current situation at Singur.

Mr.C K Birla on Tata’s Singur Project

Mr.C.K. Birla, Chairman, Hindustan Motors Limited said, “Tata’s Nano project is a prestigious project for India and for the state of West Bengal. It showcases India’s manufacturing and innovative abilities. The plant to be functional in West Bengal reinforces the State’s commitment towards industrial resurgence. It would be unfortunate if issues other than economic and social come into play and force the Tata Management to consider pulling out from Singur. The Tatas have bench marked Corporate Social Responsibility in India and they will be extending those norms in Singur as well”.

Statement from Mr. Gautam Thapar - Chairman & CEO, Avantha Group

"The controversy surrounding the Nano Project is very unfortunate.

That India's leading corporate group, Tatas, with its exemplary record in social consciousness and stakeholder care, has been caught up in an unseemingly political pull and push is unfortunate.

The Nano project has put India's manufacturing capabilities on the world map. A pullout by the Tatas at this stage would be very unfortunate, and would severely tarnish India's image as an investment destination. A constructive approach is required, and all efforts must be made to ensure that the project implementation goes forward"

This was stated by Mr. Gautam Thapar, Chairman & CEO, Avantha Group (which includes BILT, India's largest paper company and Crompton Greaves, India's largest Engineering Company).

Statement by Mr Venu Srinivasan,

Chairman TVS Motor COmpany

Industralisation is imperative for the progress of our country and its development. We have one of the youngest populations in the world, and millions are entering the working age population every year. In this context every effort at greater industrialization and employment generation has to be welcomed. From that point of view the importance of this project cannot be overemphasized. West Bengal, under the stewardship of Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharya is seeing an industrial resurgence. At this juncture this controversy which is effectively stalling an iconic project like the Nano is very unfortunate. This was mentioned by Mr Venu Srinivasan, Chairman, TVS Motor Company Limited.

Tata's have been the foremost group in industralising with a human face.  We have in Ratan Tata one of the most socially conscious business leaders of our times.  Their record of caring for all stakeholders in general and the community in particular is unparalleled.  Considering the national importance of this project, it would be unfortunate if political considerations, come in the way of India's progress, added Mr Srinivasan
