GM India – SJCE, Mysore tie-up to foster automotive industry talent

SJCE-Mysore & Partners for Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE) enter educational collaboration

New Delhi: As an endeavor to promote the development of automotive engineering and foster industry talent, General Motors India has joined Autodesk; EDS, an HP Company; Hewlett-Packard; Siemens PLM Software; and Sun Microsystems, in the creation of a PACE Center at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) Mysore, Karnataka, India. GM India has entered into a new phase, with an agreement reached with SJCE, Mysore to promote collaborative engineering efforts between academic institutions and the auto industry.

Commenting on the agreement, Mr. P. Balendran, Vice-President, GM India, said, “We are proud to be associated with SJCE, Mysore to meet the objective of providing students with the most current and technologically relevant education, thus equipping them with the skills demanded by industry.”

“Bringing PACE to SJCE reinforces GM’s commitment to India’s automotive industry and the development of the next generation of industry professionals,” said Sheila Jain Sarver, GM India Vice President Engineering. “By working with one of India’s leading academic institutions, we are providing students with practical experience today that will prepare them to meet the needs of industry tomorrow.”

“Today’s leading manufacturers compete on the basis of time to market, product cost, quality and innovation, and we are glad that the students will have the opportunity to gain experience with PLM technology that supports these objectives,” said Hans-Kurt Lübberstedt, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Siemens PLM Software. “We will work closely with SJCE to enrich its design / manufacturing engineering programs and positively impact its ability to develop top-notch engineers and technologists. Siemens PLM Software strives to develop and nurture partnerships that provide significant value for academic institutions, youth and displaced workers in our global communities.”

With the addition of SJCE, PACE has supported 49 academic institutions in ten countries around the world (including P.E.S Institute of Technology (PESIT), Bangalore and the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad.

Selected universities are invited to participate based on several criteria, including: a long-term relationship with GM as a primary educational partner and a strong recruiting relationship; strength in design, engineering and manufacturing; and the institutions current and intended interest in developing curricula using PACE products and processes. Dr. B.G.Sangameshwara, Principal SJCE said, “We work closely with the renowned corporate houses to equip students with advanced skills, hands-on experience with leading-edge, open-source technologies, and the confidence to create new technologies.”

The PACE partners are providing SJCE with more than 75 sets of NX CAD/CAM Software as well as CAE software from Altair Engineering, Engineous, LSTC, MSC Software, and ANSYS. SJCE has also received nine workstations and one large-format printer from HP.

SJCE in Mysore, Karnataka, India was established in the year 1963 under the aegis of JSS Mahavidyapeetha. The institution has carved a niche for itself as a premier centre for Technical Education with the committed and well-guided support of the management. Well equipped and sophisticated laboratories and library, highly qualified and experienced faculty and staff members, and well-designed college campus are the reasons for their success. Research activities are supported by various MNC’s by providing facilities of international standard in the institution campus.

SJCE is an Autonomous Institution under Viswesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka, India and Governed by the Grant-in-Aid rules of the Government of Karnataka. The institution is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE, New Delhi) and the courses are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). SJCE is selected as one of the Lead Institutions for Assistance by World Bank under TEQIP Scheme of Government of India, New Delhi.
