Anand Sharma inaugurates 9th CII-NID Design Summit in New Delhi

New Delhi: Minister for Commerce & Industry, Shri Anand Sharma today inaugurated the 9th CII-NID Design Summit. On the occasion he released the CII India Design Report and the CII-Raunaq Singh Innovation Grid, a platform to facilitate commercialization of innovations.

He proposed that the Government, NID, Confederation of Indian Industry and India Design Council need to work together to institutionalize the India Design Council by end of first Quarter of 2010 for the promotion of Design in India.

He also announced Ministry's plans for setting up four new National Institutes of Design in India. The locations of the 3 new NIDs have been announced as Hyderabad, Assam and MP - fourth would soon be decided. Dr Naushad Forbes, Chairman of Western Region Council of CII spoke about increasing the number of designers coming out of design colleges to ten thousand designers per year.

Dr Naushad Forbes talked about the need to focus on Design education and emphasize on prototyping capabilities and raising profile of Design across the country.  He talked about raising general standard of aesthetics in India & asked Industry to play a proactive role in doing so.

Prof. Pradyumna Vyas, Director of NID, he called for a shift from good design to right design in the age of global warming and climate change. He expressed that 230 sectors in India require design intervention and that Design is required to address diverse needs of diverse population of India, which unfortunately is untapped. He mentioned that the strategic priorities of Indian Design Council are Design Education, promotion of statutory role of Design. Prof. Vyas also mentioned that there is a need to have a culture of responsible design.

Chandrajit Banerjee, DG, CII mentioned that Design today is internationally recognized as a strong force for improving man-made environment and is the key in humanizing technologies. Globally, the focus of industry and especially the manufacturing sector is clearly shifting towards design along with technology & innovation in order to achieve competitiveness.
