Dr. Rajiv Kumar takes over from Dr. Amit Mitra as Secretary General of FICCI

New Delhi – Dr. Rajiv Kumar, a well known economist and the author of several books, has been appointed as the Secretary General of FICCI. He succeeds Dr. Amit Mitra who tendered his resignation on May 16, to pursue a political career in West Bengal.

Dr. Kumar joined FICCI as Director General in October 2010. Prior to FICCI, he was Director & Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), one of India's leading independent economic policy think tanks.

"FICCI embraced a bright future under Dr. Mitra, witnessing exceptional growth and becoming Indian industry's voice for policy change". Mr. Mariwala congratulated Dr. Mitra for the rich legacy he left behind and pointed out the major milestones in terms of revenue growth, expansion into national and international markets, staff expansion to develop a rich talent pool and enormous portfolio expansion in terms of organizing major flagship events and committees," said Harsh Mariwala, President, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Laying out a vision of FICCI's future, FICCI Leadership stated that, "FICCI's objective as the representative of Indian business and industry is to pursue change in national, sector and global policies through research, thought leadership, interaction and dissemination."

Explaining the vision further, it was stated that, "FICCI would be refocusing on the reform agenda. We are at a crucial moment today, which demands affirmative actions by the entire business community. The economy needs crucial policy changes and the coming years will require FICCI, as industry representative association to take decisive actions on a variety of fronts. FICCI will be consistently working towards maximizing advantage India and supporting India as global player."

FICCI's nine point reform agenda as mentioned focuses on:
- Expanding Share of Manufacturing in the Economy
- Higher Education and Health
- Agriculture- Yields, Supply Chains, Market Impediments
- Water Management and Conservation
- Employment Generation
- Environment and Green Urbanisation
- Governance Reforms
- Domestic Market Integration- Focus on GST
- Ease of Doing Business- Focus on State and on modernization of retail trade, improving
financial intermediation

In order to maximize Advantage India, FICCI is determined to work closely with National and State governments for:
- Nurturing Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- Increasing supply of vocational skills
- Building capacities for higher tourist arrivals
- Enhancing Brand Bollywood
- Expanding domestic capacities for defense production

Focusing on India's place in an increasingly global economy, FICCI emphasized that it would continue to expand strategic tie-ups with global think tanks. FICCI however, has been actively engaged with various events in BRICS and G8 countries and with important international forums, such as BOAO and Chicago Council.

"I see this as one of my most challenging assignments which will not only require my total commitment but will also serve as a substantial learning experience.," Dr. Kumar said. Dr. Kumar has a D.Phil. in Economics from Oxford University and a Ph.D from Lucknow University.

Dr. Kumar's appointment will be effective from May 23, 2011.
