Bangalore: CII Institute of Quality awarded Indian Petrochemicals Ltd (IPCL), UCAL Fuel and Infosys BPO for successfully deploying Six Sigma techniques in their organization. Mr. N. Reguraj, Chairman, CII Karnataka & Managing Director, Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF) Industries Limited, presented Six Sigma awards to the three companies, at the two day National Conference held in Bangalore on 13-14 August, 2007.
The CII Six Sigma National Conference, besides bringing together the experts from the field such as the academicians and key personnel from Indian industry, showcased 15 successful case studies. The case studies in this Conference covered Discrete Manufacturing, Bulk Manufacturing, Transactional process and Utility Sector adapted by different organsiations. The natures of these projects were either critical to Quality, satisfaction or cost. The 3 winners were selected from the various applicants. The improvement projects were presented on: * Manufacturing processes like welding, machining, assembly, wire drawing etc. * Transactional industries which produce bulk materials through chemical reactions * Power consumption reduction in mills * Process industries that manufacture viscose staple fiber and cokes. CII Institute of Quality has already conducted 8 batches of Six Sigma black Belt Certificate Course across the country under which 211 projects have been completed resulting in a saving of Rs.8.48 crores. 162 participants from 74 member companies have immensely benefited through this programme. In his valedictory address, Mr. Reguraj said, "Indian Industry should work towards achieving exciting levels of Quality. Over a period of time Quality drops from being exciting to normal to being just acceptable. Instead of letting the quality levels slip, we should strive hard to add new features or upgrade existing Quality levels in order to stay ahead of competition and excel,” said Mr. N. Reguraj. Mr. S. Viswanathan, Vice Chairman, CII Karnataka & Managing Director John Folwer India Pvt Ltd, in the inaugural session said, “Six Sigma provides the tools and techniques to not only improve capability and reduce the defects in any process but improve the bottom line. It is a disciplined process that helps industries to focus on developing and delivering near-perfect products and services. It is a myth to say that six sigma is only for the shop floor. This process can be used anywhere. Healthcare and retail firms are benefiting by applying the techniques of Six Sigma for its growth." According to Mr. Ram Narayan, Six Sigma Master Black Belt who co-ordinated the Conference, "Six Sigma is an initiative driven by the top management in all the processes of the company to increase the efficiency and effectiveness. This is done through structured database decision making and not through just confidence of the people." Mr. S.K. Kakkar, Principal Counsellor and Head of the CII Institute of Quality said, "Six Sigma is not a technique for solving problems, but to make business improvements of strategic importance. It is a holistic approach. The process should be simple and synergise with other approaches such as TQM, Lean and TPM to achieve company wide improvements on a sustainable basis." Mr. Rajesh Makhija, MD of SKF India, also participated in the National Conference. He said, "It is very essential for the leadership team to be committed to deploy this technique in the organization as a business improvement tool. It will not succeed if the leadership team only provides lip service and does not get involved in the project selection and implementation." The conference was attended by over 130 participants covering Six Sigma practitioners / Consultants; deployment champions; Black Belt / Green Belt holders and academicians from different parts of the country. |
