The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract valued at ₹1,560.52 crore with Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), a unit of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL), for the procurement of 47 T-72-based Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs) for the Indian Army. The agreement was finalized in New Delhi on January 21, 2025.

The BLTs are specialized vehicles designed to launch bridges for Mechanised Forces during offensive and defensive operations, enhancing mobility and operational capabilities. This procurement is classified as a “Buy Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured” initiative, aligning with efforts to promote domestic manufacturing in the defence sector.

This project is expected to contribute to local production efforts and employment within the country, as per the details shared in the press release issued by the Ministry of Defence.
