Johnson Electric has opened a new facility in Pillaipakkam, Chennai, covering more than 10,000 square metres. The site is intended to strengthen the company’s manufacturing capabilities and will gradually ramp up operations over the next 15 months with advanced assembly lines and integrated production systems.
In addition to manufacturing, the site will house the Johnson Electric Technical College (JETC), which can accommodate up to 150 students at a time. The college will feature technical laboratories and language programmes aimed at developing skilled talent.
The facility is part of the company’s efforts to expand operations in India and enhance localisation and scalability across its global network. It operates manufacturing facilities in India primarily through an existing production plant in Chennai. This facility focuses on producing motors for engine cooling fan modules and gear motors for window lift systems catering to the automotive industry.
The original Chennai plant is about 22,000 sq ft in area and initially employed around 100 staff. The company aims to develop this site into a full-range supplier of electric motors and motion subsystems for the local automotive industry in India. Johnson Electric has been expanding its production footprint in India as part of a broader strategy to serve its automotive customers more effectively locally. The Chennai plant was established around 2010 and has been part of the company’s global supply chain supporting automotive OEMs.
Johnson Electric, headquartered in Hong Kong, supplies motion systems, motors, switches and related assemblies to industries including automotive, industrial and medical equipment. The company operates a network of manufacturing and engineering facilities across multiple regions.
