Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Denmark-based Svitzer to construct a new generation of electric TRAnsverse tugs in India. The agreement was signed on 30 October 2025 during India Maritime Week in Mumbai and aims to advance electric tug manufacturing and promote low-carbon maritime operations.
Under the LoI, CSL and Svitzer will collaborate to build electrically powered TRAnsverse tugboats at CSL’s facilities in Kochi. These vessels, designed for superior manoeuvrability and efficiency in confined waters, are expected to reduce energy consumption and emissions while improving safety and operational performance in ports.
The tugs will support Svitzer’s global fleet renewal and are also intended for deployment in Indian port and terminal operations. The partnership combines Svitzer’s experience in sustainable towage with CSL’s shipbuilding capabilities and access to India’s engineering and manufacturing base.
“This LoI marks a decisive step on our electrification journey. India’s shipbuilding ecosystem and CSL’s proven track record make Cochin an excellent location to develop and build the TRAnsverse,” said Kasper Nilaus, Chief Executive Officer of Svitzer. “By combining Svitzer’s 200 years of towage experience with India’s industrial strengths, we aim to deliver cleaner, safer and more efficient harbour operations globally.”
Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited, said the partnership will highlight CSL’s technical expertise while strengthening local supply chains and capabilities. “This collaboration will accelerate the availability of high-performance, green tugboats for ports in India and abroad,” he stated.
Further details of the project will be announced upon final order confirmation.
