TEMA India Ltd, a manufacturer of process equipment, has commissioned a private test facility for performance validation of heavy water distillation components, developed through a technology transfer from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and a purchase order from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). The facility was inaugurated on 26 July 2025 in Mumbai.
Previously, such testing capabilities were available only within BARC. This new infrastructure allows in-house validation of critical components, such as distillation columns used in Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). The first batch of eight validated column sections, featuring activated phosphor bronze modules, has been dispatched for use in nuclear projects including Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP) Unit 8, Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) Units 1–4, and KAIGA Units 5 and 6.
The inauguration event was attended by K.T. Shenoy, Director of the Chemical Engineering Group at BARC, and Rajesh V, Director (Technical) at NPCIL, alongside TEMA India representatives Haresh K Sippy, Narendra Rao, and Chetan Doshi. In their remarks, Shenoy and Rajesh V acknowledged TEMA India’s role in India’s nuclear energy sector.
Ceremonial activities during the event included a symbolic dispatch of equipment, tree plantation, and a pooja ceremony.
