Lenovo has announced the launch of AI server manufacturing in India, along with the opening of a Research & Development (R&D) lab dedicated to Infrastructure Solutions. The move aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘AI for All’ initiatives, marking a step in Lenovo’s strategy to expand its technological manufacturing and research footprint in the country.
The company, which has been operating in India for nearly two decades, has enhanced its presence in recent months by establishing a Global Shared Support Center and producing locally made motherboards. The latest development is part of Lenovo’s multi-million-dollar investment to scale AI server production and infrastructure R&D in India, with the aim of creating skilled jobs in the technology sector.
AI Server Manufacturing
Lenovo’s Puducherry facility, which has been operational since 2005, will now manufacture enterprise-grade AI and GPU servers. These servers are designed for AI-driven workloads and will be produced both for local use and for export across the Asia-Pacific region. According to Lenovo, the plant has the capacity to produce around 50,000 AI rack servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units annually, with over 60% of production destined for export.
The Puducherry facility will produce five key products from Lenovo’s AI server portfolio, including three rack-mounted AI servers and two 8-way GPU models. The company views these products as central to its growth in the Indian market.
Infrastructure R&D Lab
In addition to manufacturing, Lenovo has inaugurated a new Infrastructure R&D Lab in Bengaluru. This facility joins Lenovo’s global network of 18 R&D centers and focuses on next-generation server technology. The Bengaluru lab is one of four key infrastructure labs worldwide, alongside others in Morrisville, Beijing, and Taipei.
The R&D lab will work on designing, developing, and testing server platforms, including hardware, firmware, and software. It is equipped with tools for electrical testing, thermal analysis, power characterization, and compliance validation, with a focus on ensuring the quality of server innovation before global deployment. Lenovo intends for all future server designs and technological advancements to originate from this facility.
Ongoing Investments
Lenovo has been producing products in India since 2005, manufacturing devices such as PCs and mobile products. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Lenovo produced over seven million devices in India. The company’s recent initiatives underscore its continued expansion of both manufacturing and R&D capabilities in the country. Lenovo’s R&D investments totaled $2.3 billion in FY23-24.
“As we enter the AI decade, these investments are critical to delivering best-in-class AI infrastructure and Large Language Model solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. We are excited about the growth potential this brings, not just for Lenovo, but for India as a global innovation hub,” said Amit Luthra, Managing Director, Lenovo ISG India.
With AI server manufacturing and the new R&D lab in place, Lenovo aims to enhance its presence in AI infrastructure and align with India’s broader technological and economic goals. The company views these initiatives as part of its long-term commitment to advancing its global technology roadmap.
