ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), a naval shipbuilding company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies Pvt. Ltd. to cooperate on submarine weapons technologies. The agreement covers the development, production, integration, testing, and modernisation of heavyweight torpedoes. VEM Technologies will take responsibility for integration and testing of the torpedoes in India, supported by TKMS and its segment ATLAS ELEKTRONIK.
“The Memorandum of Understanding sends a clear signal: TKMS stands ready as a reliable partner to the Indian Navy. We are applying our technical expertise to accelerate the Make-in-India strategy and strengthen the local defense industry in the long term,” said Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS.
In addition to this MoU, TKMS is expanding its cooperation with CFF Fluid Control Limited, a company that specialises in mechanical, electronic, and weapon systems for the Indian Navy. The partnership aims to support the local production of towed sonar systems and the development of anti-submarine warfare systems for surface vessels and other applications.
The companies are also exploring opportunities for joint participation in the P75(I) submarine programme, potential collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the establishment of expanded production centres to serve both Indian and international customers.
TKMS has also entered negotiations with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for India’s Project 75I submarine programme, which is valued at about INR 700 billion. The project is intended to expand and modernise the Indian Navy’s conventional submarine fleet through the construction of six diesel-electric submarines featuring German Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology in India.
TKMS is a Germany-based company engaged in naval shipbuilding, including submarines and surface vessels. It also develops naval systems and technologies through its subsidiary ATLAS ELEKTRONIK.
