Allison Transmission has expanded its manufacturing facility in Oragadam, Sriperumbudur, Chennai, following an additional investment of INR 7.63 billion, following an earlier commitment of INR 4.56 billion made during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024.
According to the company, the expansion will enable it to scale up global production of fully automatic transmissions. The facility has been operational for over 15 years, and the company reports a record of zero missed shipments and 100% on-time delivery for that duration.
The expanded facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa. The investment is expected to increase manufacturing capacity and contribute to Allison Transmission’s global supply chain.
During his visit to the factory, Rajaa also mentioned meeting a young technical associate who had joined the workforce from a rural background. She is reportedly the first graduate in her family and is currently pursuing engineering studies, supported by the company. According to Rajaa, she demonstrated a deep understanding of heavy machinery and transmission systems. Her story was shared to highlight workforce development linked to the facility’s operations.
Separately, Allison has also partnered with Ashok Leyland to deploy low-floor city buses in southern India. These 12-meter diesel buses are equipped with fully automatic Torqmatic Series transmissions and are designed for improved accessibility, including for passengers with disabilities.
