Yazaki has commenced development of a 316,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Chengalpattu, Chennai, in partnership with Horizon Industrial Parks. The new unit will support Yazaki’s wire harness production operations for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in India and is expected to employ over 2,000 people.
This plant marks Yazaki’s third facility developed in collaboration with Horizon Industrial Parks, following earlier projects in Hosur and Farukhnagar. The Chennai unit is a built-to-suit facility located within Horizon’s industrial park, which is equipped to support rooftop solar power and has been designed to accommodate large-scale manufacturing operations.
According to a press release issued by the company, Yazaki currently operates 12 plants in India and employs approximately 4,200 workers at its Hosur and Farukhnagar facilities. The new Chennai plant brings the total leased area by Yazaki in collaboration with Horizon to nearly 1 million square feet.
Yazaki’s Hosur facility, established in 2023, spans 260,000 square feet and was delivered by Horizon within six months of the letter of intent signing. The company’s third facility in NCR is of a similar size. Both the Hosur and NCR facilities have received Platinum ratings from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), and are built with provisions for energy-efficient operations and environmental compliance.
Commenting on the collaboration, P V Raju, CEO of Yazaki India, said, “After evaluating several industrial developers, we chose to partner with Horizon, and they supported us in meeting our timely-delivery commitment to our customers by handing over the Hosur plant to us within 6 months.”
The Chennai facility will include several infrastructure features aimed at improving operational efficiency. These include a rooftop solar installation with 500 kW capacity, separate entries for workers and materials, a sewage treatment plant with 110 KLD capacity, and a standard floor load capacity of 5 MT/m². Additional structures such as a 3.7-meter-high scrap shed, a 16.5-meter-wide concrete apron for heavy vehicle movement, and designated parking for two-wheelers and buses are also part of the plan.
Horizon Industrial Parks, owned and managed by Blackstone Real Estate funds, manages approximately 50 million square feet of leasable industrial and logistics space across India. The Chengalpattu location is part of Horizon’s broader development efforts in key industrial regions, with access to infrastructure such as the new peripheral ring road connecting to Chennai Port.
Yazaki was established in 1941 and operates in 46 countries with a global workforce of over 230,000. In India, it supplies wire harnesses to multiple automobile OEMs and continues to expand its local manufacturing footprint to align with customer demand.
