Alstom has been awarded a contract by Larsen & Toubro Limited to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars (39 six-car trainsets) and a Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, along with five years of maintenance services, for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The agreement is valued at several hundred million euros, according to information provided by the company.

Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line, is a 35.3 km elevated corridor from Wadala in central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane, with 32 stations. Larsen & Toubro had earlier secured the Integrated Systems Package contract from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, covering rolling stock, signalling, telecommunications, platform screen doors and depot systems.

All 39 driverless Metropolis trainsets will be designed at Alstom’s Bangalore engineering centre and manufactured at the company’s Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. Propulsion systems will be produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, while bogies will be built in Savli, Gujarat. The Sri City plant has the capacity to produce up to 480 metro cars annually.

The driverless trains will feature interior airflow cooling, wheelchair access and bike racks. They will also incorporate safety measures including electrical braking and cybersecurity systems. Alstom will provide FlexCare Perform maintenance services for five years, covering the entire fleet of 234 cars.

The Urbalis Forward CBTC signalling system, developed at Alstom’s Bangalore site, will enable Grade of Automation 4, or driverless operation. The system will be managed through an Operations Control Centre at Mandale depot, with a backup Control Centre at Mogharpada. The signalling technology will regulate headway and safety for the 39 trainsets.

Alstom currently supplies trains and signalling for other Mumbai Metro lines, including the Aqua Line, which carries more than 1.6 million passengers daily. The company is also delivering signalling and telecom solutions for Lines 2, 7, 7A and 9.

Alstom is a rail transport manufacturer operating in multiple markets, with expertise in rolling stock, signalling systems and services. Its Metropolis metros operate in more than 80 cities worldwide, and its CBTC solutions are deployed on over 90 operational metro lines.
