Alstom, a provider of rail transport systems, will manufacture 96 driverless metro cars for Chennai Metro Phase II at its facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, as part of a EUR 135 million contract awarded by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The design work for the trainsets will be carried out at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The contract also includes testing, commissioning, and 15 years of maintenance support.
The order covers the production of 32 three-car Metropolis trainsets. Each trainset is designed to accommodate approximately 900 passengers and will include features such as multi-train operation and evacuation systems. Maintenance responsibilities include cleaning services, obsolescence management, and upkeep of equipment at the depot site after the warranty period.
The Chennai Metro Phase II spans approximately 119 kilometres, with 76 kilometres elevated and 43 kilometres underground, and includes three main corridors. The new trains are part of an expansion plan to support growing urban transit needs in the region.
“Our journey in India began with Chennai Metro Phase I in 2010, marking our first Rolling Stock order in the country. This new contract strengthens our association with CMRL in helping modernise Chennai’s urban rail mobility landscape. We are proud to be chosen to manufacture world-class, Made-in-India metro trains that will further enhance the commuter experience, with an environmentally friendly, safe and reliable solution,” said Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India.
Alstom is also manufacturing 108 metro cars for another corridor of Phase II, linking Poonamallee Bypass to Light House. For Phase I, it delivered 208 cars and partnered with Larsen & Toubro for track construction across Corridors I and II.
Alstom operates globally in rail transport systems including rolling stock, signalling, infrastructure, and services. Its Metropolis metro range is deployed in over 70 cities, and the company maintains more than 5,000 metro cars worldwide. In India, Alstom has supported metro projects in several cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow.
