IndiGo has officially begun work on a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru. The project, spread across 31 acres, involves an investment of INR 11 billion and is expected to be fully operational by early 2028.
The facility will include up to 12 hangar bays, capable of servicing both narrow‑body and wide‑body aircraft — including models such as the A320, A321 XLR and the upcoming A350. This marks a significant expansion in maintenance capacity, roughly three times the combined capacity of IndiGo’s existing MRO operations in Delhi and Nagpur.
IndiGo says the project will create over 750 high‑skill direct jobs (engineers, technicians and support roles), with total employment potentially exceeding 1,000 when including ancillary services. The construction follows a land‐allocation MoU signed with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) in May 2025.
Separately, Air India is developing a competing MRO facility at the same airport on 35 acres, with an investment of around INR 14 billion, expected to generate ~1,200 jobs and be operational by early 2026.
“This also strengthens our operational presence in Bengaluru, which is one of our largest bases with over 200 daily flights,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. The new facility is intended to enhance aircraft availability, cost‑efficiency, and turnaround times—while boosting Karnataka’s broader aerospace and defence ecosystem.
IndiGo, headquartered in Gurugram, is currently India’s largest passenger airline by market share, operating a fleet of over 400 aircraft and serving both domestic and international destinations.
