John Cockerill India Limited, a provider of industrial solutions, has received a contract valued at around INR 500 million from Godawari Power and Ispat Limited. The order involves the engineering, design, manufacture and supply of a 6HI cold rolling mill for installation at Godawari’s facility in Tilda, Chhattisgarh. The agreement also includes supervision of erection and commissioning.
John Cockerill India will deliver all critical components required for the mill and oversee commissioning to meet performance guarantees. The project is scheduled for execution by the end of 2026.
The order has been awarded by a domestic entity and does not involve related party transactions or promoter group interests.
A 6HI cold rolling mill is a type of rolling mill used primarily for cold rolling metal strips such as steel and stainless steel. It features six rolls: work rolls, intermediate rolls, and backup rolls. The key characteristic of the 6HI mill is the presence of two intermediate rolls positioned between the work rolls and the backup rolls. These intermediate rolls can be shifted laterally and have bending capabilities, which helps in controlling the shape, flatness, and thickness of the rolled strip with high precision.
Compared to 4-high mills, 6HI mills have a wider utilization range and are designed to produce high-quality cold-rolled strips with tight tolerances in thickness and excellent surface finish. The 6HI mill is used mainly in offline applications for cold rolling of soft to medium hardness strips, accommodating a wide strip width range. Features such as hydraulic gauge control, roll bending (both positive and negative), intermediate roll shifting, and automatic pass line adjustment contribute to its accuracy and efficiency.
These mills offer advantages including improved strip flatness and shape control, ability to roll ultra-thin gauges with tight thickness tolerance, high rolling speeds up to around 1200 m/min or more, high torque transmission capability due to larger rolls, and advanced automatic controls for shape and gauge.
