ABB India Limited has expanded its domestic manufacturing capacity with the launch of a new production line for variable speed drive (VSD) modules at its Peenya facility in Bengaluru. The expansion increases the company’s local drive production capacity by about 25 percent and aims to meet rising demand for energy-efficient industrial technologies.
According to a press release issued by ABB India on 28 October 2025, the new line will manufacture drives with large power ratings used across sectors such as buildings, data centres, water, cement and metals. Localised production is expected to reduce lead times by up to 40 percent and enable delivery of customised “made-to-order” drives.
AR Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products, ABB India, said the expansion marked two decades of drives production in the country and reinforced the company’s commitment to advancing local manufacturing. He added that the upgraded facility integrates advanced automation to enhance reliability, speed and agility.
The new line incorporates robotics and digital production monitoring to improve efficiency, safety and quality. Sensor-based tools enable accurate component placement and real-time operational visibility, aligning with Industry 4.0 standards. Automated systems also handle the movement of assembled drives to reduce manual processes and enhance workplace safety.
Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion, stated that ABB’s drives play a key role in supporting India’s energy efficiency goals. He noted that the latest factory expansion aligns with the country’s industrial growth ambitions and supports local ecosystems for cleaner and more efficient operations.
The Peenya facility upgrade coincides with ABB marking 50 years of global innovation in VSDs and 20 years of drives manufacturing in India. The company’s drives are deployed across infrastructure and industrial applications such as metros, airports, pharmaceuticals and metals to regulate motor speed and improve energy performance.
In June this year, the Drive Products manufacturing facility in Peenya, Bengaluru won the silver award at the 11th edition of National Awards for Manufacturing Competitiveness (NAMC), based on a comprehensive assessment of the facility. NAMC is instituted by International Research Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM), a global research, management consulting, and training firm dedicated to the manufacturing sector
ABB India Limited, part of Switzerland-based ABB Group, is engaged in electrification and automation technologies. The company operates across sectors including motion, process automation, and robotics, and serves industrial, utility and infrastructure customers across India.
