LICO Materials has launched a battery recycling facility in Bengaluru capable of processing 17,500 metric tonnes of lithium-ion batteries annually. The plant currently has an infeed capacity of 4GWh per year, with plans to increase this to 10GWh in the near future.

The facility is designed to recover critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel using a zero-liquid-discharge process. These materials will be repurposed for use in gigafactories and energy storage systems, creating a closed-loop supply chain for battery production.

The plant will also process black mass, an intermediate product in battery recycling, into battery-grade metal salts. These materials are intended to support the growing demand for energy storage systems and electric vehicle production.

Gaurav Dolwani, CEO of LICO Materials, highlighted the facility’s role in addressing supply chain challenges for critical raw materials and supporting India’s transition to clean energy.
